TABLE 2
Uaxactun Masonry Types
| Period |
Description |
| Pre-Vault a-f |
Characterized by Chicanel ceramics and low platforms faced with percussion or cut stones coated with plaster. Superstructures built of perishable materials. Corbeled vault absent. In latter part of period, substructure masonry was of large, well-shaped, and faced stones laid in horizontal courses and tailed deeply into a fill of small, tightly packed marl. |
| Vault I a-h |
Contemporary with Tzakol ceramics, carved and dated stone monuments, and corbeled vault. The facing of substructures is of large well-cut stones laid horizontally in courses and tailed into the fill. Superstructure masonry typified by horizontally laid, roughly dressed stones tailed into fill and abundant use of spalls. Floors under walls and benches are rare. |
| Vault II a-b |
Characterized by Tepeu ceramics, some stones tailed into hearting and some are veneer. Transition phase between early slab and late veneer on substructures. Floors do not go under walls. Substructures are faced with smaller stones than in Vault I are laid both horizontally and vertically. |
| Vault II c |
Benches are common but secondary to rooms. Substructures are faced with nicely cut stones laid vertically as a veneer. The backs of these stones are rounded which gives some bondage to the fill. |
| Vault II d-h |
Veneer of superstructures is of thinner, flatter and squarer. Benches are common and are built as a unit with the walls. The stones veneering substructures are thinner, less rectangular and flat on the inner surface. |
